Normal hepatic vein patterns on ultrasound

Abstract

Understanding of the anatomy of the heaptic vein is important in mainipulation for transplantation of the liver, hepatectomy and the treatment of hepatic trauma with avulsion of the hepatic vein. demonstration of theinferior right hepatic vein(IRHV) is also important; in some cases of hepatocellular carcinoma, thrombus can beseen in the IRHV; in primary Budd-Chiari syndrome, the IRHV is the main draining vein; during hepatectomy, the postero-inferior segment of the right lobe and draining IRHV can be preserved. For some 10 months ultrasound examination was done in a total of 124 patients wtih normal liver function with special emphasis on the hepaticveins, their branches, and the IRHV, and analysed in terms of braching pattern and relative size of the hepaticve in and the detection rate of the IRHV.
