Xerosialographic evaluation of salivary gland diseases

Abstract

Clinicians have been dependant mainly o the radiologica findings in the diagnosis of the disease of salivarygland, because of difficulty in diagnosis or differentiation of the disease by clinical findings alone and paucityof laboratory method to support it. Among the various radiologic methods, xerosialography is the most simple, convenient and accurate method for diagnosis of salivary gland disease. We experienced 32 xerosialograms inpatients of salivary gland disease and noticed many advantages of it. The results are as follows: 1. The msotcommon lesion is benign mixed tumor, which is occupided over 2/3 of total. 2. Patients' clinical symptom andsigns are pain, tenderness, swelling and palpable mass on the salivary gland area, but there is no spacificfindings to identify each salivary gland area, but there is no specific findings to identify each salivary glandlesions by clinical symptom. 3. Differential diagnosis of benign and malignant tumor is easy by xerosialographicfindings. 4. Xerosialogram is more accurated than conventional film sialography and possible to identify smallstructures of salivary gland with good detail on one image and also more easily interpreted without special meansof viewing.
