Computed tomographic findings of the thoracolumbar burst fractures

Abstract

The authors reviewed CT findings of 25 burst fractures in 24 patients of 106 spinal truma and evaluated the degree of spinal canal narrowing and analyzed the retropulsed fagment. 1. The most common location was L1(36%). 2.We agrreed with those authors who report no correlation between degree of neurologic impairement and degree ofspinal canal narrowing. 3. The burst fractures were classified into stable (36%) and unstable fractures(64%). 4.CT analysis of retropulsed fragment: (1) 52% of retropulsed fragment had a sagittal oriented fracture. (2) 20% ofretropulsed fragment has rotated 0-90 degrees and all rotated fragments demonstrated anterior rotation. (3)Movement of the retropulsed fragment in cranial (80%) and caudal(20%) direction(3-7mm) were noted. (4) Fracture extending to region of basevertebral foramen was demonstrated in 20(80%).
