Computed tomographic evaluation of laryngeal carcinoma and cervical lymph node metastasis

Abstract

A critical decision in the management of laryngeal carcinoma is the identification of metastasis to regionallymph nodes. CT provides a unique, noninvasive technique for precisely evaluating the deep extent of laryngealcarcinoma and the presence of lymphadenopathy. The CT scans of 21 patients with laryngeal carcinoma were reviewed retrospectively to determine the relationship between tumor extent and lymph node metastasis. The risk of lymphnode metastasis was higher in massive tumor extending beyond the larynx to involve soft tissues of neck(p<0.05).
