Ultrasound guided aspiration cytology of neck mass except thyroid mass

Abstract

Results of ultrasound guided aspiration cytology of extrathyroidal neck masses of 73 paitents were reviewed.Included cases were 23 malignant lesions; 16 metastatic tumors, 4 lymphomas, 3 salivary gland tumors and 50 benignlesions; 24 tuberculous lymphadenites, 15 abscess, 3 benign lymph node hyperplasias, etc. There were one case offalse negative and none of false positive result for malignancy. In two cases of malignancy, insufficient cellularmaterial was obtained. In one case of lymphoma, and a benigh lymph node hyperplasia, it was difficult todistinguish between benignancy and malignancy on cytologic smear. For the malignant lesions, sensitivity was 83%,specificity was 98%, and overall accuracy was 93%. There were none who had suffered adverse effect from the procedure. Ultrasound guided aspiration cytology seems to be simple, accurate and safe diagnostic modality forneck masses especially in condition that malignancy can not be excluded.
