Comparative evaluation of pain between angiografin 60 and ultravist 300 during peripheral angiography

Abstract

All currently used ionic radiographic contrast agents have been reported to cause pain during peripheralarteriography, which can be related to their marked hyperosmolality in relation to blood. A number of studies havedemonstrated that Ultravist (iopromide), a nonionic contrast agent of relatively low osmolality, causessignificantly less discomfort and pain than equivalent conventional ionic contrast media. We used Ultravist 300(iopromide), nonionic, and Angiografin 60 (meglumine diatrizoate), ionic, in 30 patients with double blindrandomized manner during peripheral angiography. The subjective pain was compared. The results were as follows: 1.In comparsion of the pain of Ultravist 300 with Angiografin 60 in 30 patients there were observed moderately lesspain with Ultravist 300 in 14 cases (46.7%), markedly less pain or no pain in 11 cases (36.75), and no differencein 5 cases (16.6%). 2. Total 25(83.4%) cases show less or no pain with Ultravist 300, which must be due to lowerosmolality.
