The radiotherapy of cancer of maxillary antrum

Abstract

Between 1969 and July1975, Frotysix patients with maxillary carcinoma were treated by radiation (44) andcombined surgery and radiation (2). Twenty five of 46 patients were available for follow up examination. Squamouscell carcinoma accounted for 84% of the lesions, 92% of them showed definite destruction of the bony sinus walls.The radiotherapy consisting of 6000-7000 rads tumor dose in 6 to 7 weeks, by Co-60 teletherapy unit. Twelve of 25patients were dead within 12 months after radiation therapy alone. Reviewing of the literature, the best resultswill be obtained if radiotherapy and surgery are combined.
