Abstract

We investigated the presumed circle area ratio(PCAR) and transitional zone volume of the prostate by transrectal sonography in 89 patients and compared to the 23 patients with no evidence of benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH)(Group A ; n=23) with 66 patients with BPH. The later 66 patients were divided into 2 groups ; those with clinical evidence of BPH with prostatism(Group B ; n=34), and those with clinical evidence of BPH with acute urinary retention(Group C ; n=32). The mean of the PCAR was 0.75+/-0.06 in group A, 0.84+/-0.06 in group B and 0.85+//-0.07 in group C. The mean size of the transitional zone was 6.0+/-2.1g in group A, 23.1+/-16.9g in group B and 28.1+/-18.3g in group C. The mean percentage of the transitional zone volume as a component of the total prostate volume(TZV/TPV) was 32.2+/-8.2% in the group A, 49.9+/-18.6% in the group B and 58.6+/-13.7 in the group C. Transrectal sonography using a biplaner probe allows accurate measurement of the transition zone and PCAR. The PCAR and TZV/TPV could be used as another index of BPH.
