Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES
Inverted papilloma (IP) is the common benign tumor in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus. Because CT scan has become common and necessary prior to surgeries, there has been an increasing interest for CT findings. The aim of this study was to discover the CT characteristics of IP in comparison to other benign tumors.
SUBJECTS AND METHOD
The patient group for IP included 56 patients who had received an endoscopic sinus surgery at Samsung Medical Center between March 1995 and September 2002. The control group included 50 random patients having other benign lesions. The CT findings have been analyzed, and medical charts have been reviewed retrospectively. The CT characteristics such as surface irregularity, air sign between tumor and surrounding tissues, bony thickening, choanal extension, and bony destruction have been compared. The statistical analysis has been performed with Chi-square.
RESULTS
Surface irregularity was observed in 78% of the IP group. However, only 28% of the control group showed surface irregularity (p<0.0001). The air sign was observed in 46% of the IP group, whereas it was only observed in 18% of the control (p=0.005). Bony thickening was observed in 57% and 30% of the IP group and the control, respectively (p=0.009). Choanal extension was shown in 54% of the IP group and 26% of the control, which excludes four instances of antrochoanal polyp (p=0.018). Bony destruction was not well observed in either group.
CONCLUSION
The CT characteristic findings of IP are very specific and thus greatly helpful in the diagnosis of the disease.
