Abstract

Keratoprosthesis implantation is the only method to improve vision in patients with poor success rate of penetrating keratoplasy. But due to high complication rate and short retention period, the success of keratoprosthesis has been limited. We designed this study to compare the clinical course of SKPro implanted rabbits with those of Worst type KPro and Legeais type KPro[Bio-KP(r)]. SKPro was retained well for 6-month follow up period without complications such like endophthalmitis, and retroprosthetic membrane in all three rabbits. But in rabbits implanted with Worst type KPro, two rabbits showed severe endophthalmitis during early postoperative period and the remaining rabbit also developed late endophthalmitis along with poor mechanical stability in pressure loading test. Legeais type KPro was implanted in only one rabbit and endophthalmitis was developed in early postoperative period. In conclusion SKPro showed a relatively superior clinical course after implantation in rabbits and this suggests the possibility of clinical application of SKPro in human cases.
