The Surgical Treatment of Nevus of Ota with Ocular Involvement

Abstract
- Nevus of Ota, which is more common in orientals, is a blue or brown-colored pigmentation of the skin of periorbital region in the distribution of the first & second division of the trigeminal nerve. Two-thirds of all the cases show ocular involvement, which includes episclera, uvea, trabecular meshwork, conjunctiva, sclera and optic disc. The skin pigmentation in patients with nevus of Ota has been treated with several kinds of lasers, but there is no certain therapeutic modality in treating episcleral pigmentation. We report the surgical treatment of episcleral pigmentary lesion in patients with nevus of Ota. Lamellar scleral dissection and scleral flap reversion with suture were performed in two cosmetically handicapped patients who had been diagnosed as nevus of Ota since birth. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of treatment of nevus of Ota with ocular involvement.
