The positional change of condylar head after orthognathic surgery using simplified condyle positioning device

Abstract

It's very important to maintain the function of temporomandibular joint as well as accurate diagnosis and treatment planning in the orthognathic surgery. Many efforts have been introduced to keep condylar segment in the optimal position during the orthognathic surgery. The use of condylar positioning device during the orthognathic surgery is controvertial. The reasons for not using the condyle positioning device are thought to be one of followings. 1) Operator's own method without device is relatively acceptable 2) patients have adaptations ability after some positional changes of condylar segment 3) The use of condylar positional device is time consuming. Authors think many orthognathic surgeons will use the device If condyle positioning device is practical and time saving to applicate. Authors made simplified condyle positioning device during orthognathic surgery. It's simple and it take around 5minutes to applicate it. This study was intended to evaluate condyle position after orthognathic surgery using simplified condyle positioning device. Authors used transcranial radiograph taken before and after operation. Anterior, superior, and posterior joint space were measured. The result showed no significant positional change of proximal segment in all 3 joint space after one jaw and two jaw surgery. This study suggests that the simplified condyle positioning device is acceptable and recommendable in rthognathic surgery.
