Multiple Myeloma

Abstract
- The multiple myeloma is, by no means, a rare disease in this country, and it occasionally involves the bony orbit. However, it rarely affects soft tissues in the orbit. To our knowledge, no case has been reported which involved. an extraocular muscle in the orbit causing a marked exophthalmos. Therefore, we report a case of multiple myeloma which involved right inferior rectus muscle selectively and caused a marked exophthalmos in this eye. Roentogenological bone series and laboratory tests including bone marrow study proved this disease. The right orbit of this patient was examined through orbitotomy, and found to have a remarkable hypertrophy and a greyish discoloration of the inferior rectus muscle while rest of orbital contents were entirely normal. The entire length of inferior rectus muscle was excised for biopsy. It was a plasmacytoma. The exophthalmos was corrected following surgery.
