Relationship between FIGO Stage , Histologic Grade and Nuclear Mean Area of Tumor Cell in Invasive Epithelial Ovarian Cancer with Preoperative Serum CA 125 Level

Abstract


OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this study was to determine significance of preoperative serum CA 125 level of primary invasive ovarian cancer with respect to histologic grade, tumor stage and nuclear mean area [micrometer2]. METHOD: A retrospective analysis was done in 35 patients with primary invasive ovarian carcinoma at Kyung-Hee Medical Center from January 1993 to December 1997. In this study we analysed the significance of preoperative serum CA 125 level with respect to FIGO stage, histologic grade and neclear mean area estimated by histomorphometry.
RESULTS
Tumor stage bore a strong influence on the preoperative CA 125 level : The correlation was high and statistically significant. [ r= 0.650, p=0.035 ] Histologic grade bore no meaningful influence on the preoperative CA 125 level: The correlation was low and statistically insignificant. [ r= 0.312, p= 0.068] Nuclear mean area of tumor cell estimated by histomorphometry bore no meaningful influence on the preoperative CA 125 level: The correlation was low and statistically insignificant. [ r= 0.320, p= 0.061].
CONCLUSION
Our data suggests that FIGO stage has significant effect on serum CA 125 level but both histologic grade and nuclear mean area have no significant effect on preoperative serum CA 125 level.
