Laryngeal Injuries Caused by Endotracheal Intubation

Abstract
- Endotracheal intubation (ETI) is the one of the most common procedure undertaken in intensive care unit (ICU). There are some reports of laryngeal complication after the endotracheal intubation. We examined the larynx and trachea using fiberoptic laryngoscope after tracheotomy in ICU patients who had been intubated endotracheally. The grading system was adopted to classify laryngeal sequelae. Laryngeal complication was correlated with the duration of nasogastric tube insertion with statistical significance. There is no correlation between the laryngeal sequelae and the duration of ETI. The more severe grade immediately after extubation it has, the more severe grade at follow-up it does as well.
