Comparison of cetirizine and terfenadine in the treatmebt of perennial rhinitis

Abstract

A double blind placebo controlled cross over study was carried out in 60 patients with perennial rhinitis to assess the efficacy and safety of once daily 10mg eetiriz-ine and twice daily 60mg terfenadine. Subjects have been suffered from sneezing, rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction and itching of many years, with a total pretreatment symptom severity score of 7 or more. Patients were randomized to treatment with cetiriz-ine or terfenadine for 2 weeks, and crossed over after 1 week of wash out period. Both cetirizine in once daily 10mg dosages and terrenadine in twice daily 60mg dosages proved to be effective in reliving the overall symptoms of perennial rhinitis except nasal obstruction. Cetirizine improved nasal itching more effectively than terfenadine. After 5 weeks of over all trial period, patients preferred eetirizine to terrenadine. Both drugs were welI tolerated, and the laboratory tests showed no abnormality. It is suggested that ceti-rizine is safe and effective in the management of perennial rhinitis.
