Abstract

This study was designed to define the clinical manifestations of mumps orchitis in older patients and to evaluate the effect of Interferon-alpha2b on the outcome. We reviewed 20 patients aged 12 to 43 years (average 21 years) who had mumps orchtis during the 15 months from July 1993 to September 1994. Bilateral orchitis was found in 5 patients (25%). In the cases of unillateral orchitis, the right side was affected in 6 cases (30%) and the left in 9 cases (45%). Testicular atrophy (bilateral 2 cases, unilateral 8 cases) was observed in 80% of the 10 patients (bilateral two cases, unilateral two cases) who received interferon-alpha2b (3x10(6) IU/day) for 7 to 10 days, there was no evidence of testicular atrophy.
