Abstract

To observe the normal development of prostate, we measured the size of 114 prostates from infant to adolescent by trans-abdominal ultrasonography. The volume of prostate was calculated using the formula for ellipsoid objects. In infants, the prostates were uniformly flat triangular column and became elliptic cylinder in shape with the age. The width, thickness and length of the prostate showed linear growth pattern with the age. The mean volume of the prostate was 0.28 ml in infant and 6.09 ml in 15-16 years old. The prostate grew slowly with the age under 9-10 years old or with the height under 130 cm and thereafter grew rapidly with the age or with the height. There were good correlations between the prostatic volume, the age and the height.
