The Effects of Medical and Surgical Treatment on Renal Growth in Children with Infected Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR)

Abstract

This study was undertaken to determine (l) the difference in renal growing state between the group of having the infected VUR and of normal children(2) the ability of recovery of renal growth after treatment in the infected VUR cases. 366 intravenous pyelograms, interpreted as normal by a radiologist and by a urologist, were reviewed to define the normal parenchymal thickness in children of various ages. The renal parenchymal thickness was measured in 37 cases of infected VUR during the period of 3 months to 5 years after treatment, 13 of them had medical treatment and 24 of them had surgical treatment. In 15 cases among 37 cases the renal parenchymal thickness was subnormal and showed noticeable correlation with grade of reflux. In 3 cases the renal parenchyma was getting thinner and thinner during the first 6 to 18 months in spite of successful medical treatment. Among 24 case having the successful surgery ureteral reimplantation did not improve the renal growth in 11 cases, and 5 of these 11 cases showed getting thinner in renal parenchymal thickness. The obtained datas were illustrated in figures. It can be concluded that the renal growth in the group of the infected VUR is likely to be accelerated with treatment, but some cases show steadily reduced renal parenchymal thickness. It is suspected there are some processes of undergoing diffuse scar tissue formation in the renal parenchyma even after successful treatment.
