Clinical Observation on Renal Tuberculosis

Abstract

A clinical observation was made on 38 cases of renal tuberculosis who were admitted to the Department of Urology. Seoul Red Cross Hospital, from January 1972 to December, 1977. The results summarized as follows 1) Incidence of renal tuberculosis was 5.8% of all in-patients 2) Age distribution showed that 11 cases (29.0%) were in 31-40 years, 8 cases (21.0%) in 21-30 years, 8 cases (21.0%) in 41-50 years. 3) Both kidneys were affected in 6 cases, while 19 cases in right and 13 cases were in the left kidney 4) The important subjective symptoms were as follows; frequency in 52.6%, flank pain in 39.5% gross hematuria 39.5%, and painful urination in 21.1% 5) 26.3% of the cases visited the hospital with in one month to 6 months after the onset of symptoms. 6) 52.6% of the cases were associated with pulmonary tuberculosis. 7) Urinary findings revealed hematuria in 73.7% and pyuria in 63.2%, urine AFB was found in 36.8%. 8) On the urogram, non-visualization of the kidney, was found in 39.5%, calyectasis in 39.5% and clyceal destruction in 28.9% 9) Cystoscopic findings showed active lesions of cystitis in 31.6% and fibrosis with trabeculation in 23.7%. 10) Nephrectomy was performed in 15 cases out of 38 cases.
