A Clinical Observation on the Nephrectomized Patients

Abstract

Since Gustave Simon performed the first planned nephrectomy in l869, it has been one of the most important procedures in the field of urologic surgery. Various indications for this procedure have been proposed and a variety of methods have been introduced, thus complications of this surgery have been varied according to the particular methods used. A .clinical observation on the 153 patients nephrectomized in the Department of Urology, Kyungpook National University Hospital, during the period from January, 1962 to December, l97l was presented with a brief review of the literature. The results were as follows: 1) The total number of out-patients during the period was estimated to ll,7l3 and of which nephrectomies were performed in 153 of the 740 total urologic operations (20.68%). 2) Age distribution showed the highest in 20's with 26.15, and the youngest case was observed at the age of 2. the oldest at 65. Male outnumbers female with the ratio of 1.7:1. 3) The causative lesions of the kidney showed the highest in tuberculosis (42.5%), renal stone (19.6%), renal injury (10.5%), renal tumor (10.5%). hydronephrosis (6.5%) in its descending order. 4) Lumbar approach with resection of 12th rib was the most frequently employed (56.2%). and complications were seen in 20 of the 80 cases. Of which, 6 cases of pneumothorax was the highest. 5) Eighty five cases (55.6%) were released within two weeks after surgery and only four cases were remained more than 4 weeks after surgery.
