Abstract

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The dysmotility-like functional dyspepsia (DLFD) is common in Korea. Scveral studies of gastric emptying time (GET) in DLFD were carried out but, the studies of electrogastro- graphy (EGG) are uncommon. The aims of this study are to investigate the relationship between GET and EGG and to speculate the role of EGG in DLFD.
METHODS
The GET or EGG was performed in 36 healthy volunteers and 47 patients with DLFD. The GET was measured with radionuclide scintigraphy. The EGG was performed using digitrapper EGG. The delayed GET was defined as T 1/2 which was longer than the mean value (+/-l standard deviation) of controls. The abnormal EGG findings were defined as dominant slow wave frequency below 65% or postprandial to fasting power ratio below 1.
RESULTS
The delayed GET were observed in 22 patients (46.8%). The abnormal EGG findings in patierts group (42.6%, 20/47) were more common than those in healthy volunteer (13%, 2/15), Among 25 patients with normal GET, the abnormal EGG findings were observed in 10 patients (40.0%). Among 22 patients with delayed GET, the normal EGG findings were observed in 12 patients (54.5%).
CONCLUSIONS
The abnorml EGG findings were not correlated with the delayed GET, but symptoms in DLFD could be explained partially by the abnormal EGG findings and the delayed GET.
