Abstract

Proper dental and occlusal development plays a fundamental role not only in mastication but also in the establishment and maintenance of oral-phase swallowing. This review outlined the biological development of diphyodont and heterodont dentition and explored the relationship between dental growth and swallowing function. We examined how anomalies such as hypodontia, malocclusion, oral habits, and developmental disabilities can compromise oral coordination. Preventive oral care strategies based on age, the rational use of fluoride, and comprehensive oral management for patients with dysphagia were also discussed. The role of pediatric dentists in early intervention and interdisciplinary collaboration to support optimal swallowing outcomes and oral health was emphasized. In conclusion, age-tailored preventive dental care and interdisciplinary collaboration led by pediatric dentists are essential to optimize swallowing outcomes and oral health.
