Abstract

Periodontitis is an oral disease characterized by inflammation of the periodontal tissue. Periodontitis eventually leads to the destruction of periodontal structures, including the loss of the alveolar bone. Monocytes and neutrophils infiltrate the periodontitis lesions. Through immunohistochemistry, this study analyzed changes in the activation of these immune cells throughout the course of periodontitis induction. In this study, periodontitis was induced in ICR mice by ligating the cementoenamel junction of the maxillary left second molar. Immunohistochemistry was performed on the maxillary bone tissue extracted on days 1, 3, 5, 8, 11, and 14 after ligation. The activation of monocytes and neutrophils in the periodontal tissues was the highest on day 5 of periodontitis induction. These results indicate that the activation of monocytes and neutrophils on day 5 may contribute to periodontal tissue destruction. These findings provide fundamental data for future studies on periodontitis and may help determine the onset and extent of periodontal tissue damage caused by periodontitis.
