Impact of Nursing Professionalism, Ethical Sensitivity, and the Clinical Learning Environment on Nursing Students' Intention to Report Near Misses and Adverse Events

Abstract

Purpose
Medical errors, including near-miss and adverse events, pose significant risks to patient safety. Error reporting is essential for preventing future incidents and promoting a strong patient safety culture. Purpose: This study aimed to examine the impact of professional nursing values, ethical sensitivity, and clinical practice environment on nursing students' intentions to report near-misses and adverse events.
Methods
A crosssectional survey was conducted using self-reported questionnaires to measure professional nursing values, ethical sensitivity, clinical practice environment, and intentions to report near-misses and adverse events. Statistical analyses were performed to identify factors influencing reporting intentions. Results: Ethical sensitivity significantly influenced the intentions to report both near-misses and adverse events. However, professional nursing values and the clinical practice environment did not have statistically significant effects.
Conclusion
This study emphasizes the need to improve ethical sensitivity among nursing students through targeted education. Additionally, fostering a supportive patient safety culture and establishing clear reporting systems are critical for improving error reporting behaviors.
