Abstract

The popularity of water sports has rapidly increased over the last several years. Previous studies have reported an increase in speed boat accidents. Axial compression injuries due to the splashdown of light watercraft when riding over uneven water surfaces are known to be relatively common in speedboat accidents. There have been reports of compression fractures resulting from this, but reports of complications such as residual neurological deficits are rare. Even the safety manuals of speedboat manufacturers or the water sports safety regulations of national public institutions contain, no warnings or related regulations for severe injuries in the event of a splashdown accident. Therefore, the authors reported a rare case of thoracic vertebrae burst fracture and spinal shock caused by a splashdown accident in which a speedboat collided with a high wave.
