Abstract

Background
Metabolic syndrome and frailty are associated with functional decline in the elderly. An elderly individual’s risk of frailty reportedly decreases as the protein intake decreases. However, in Korea, carbohydrates comprise 70% of the total energy source for more than half of elderly patients with metabolic syndrome. This study aimed to determine the relationship between protein/carbohydrate intake ratio and metabolic syndrome in an elderly Korean population.
Methods
A total of 3,758 participants of the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey conducted from 2016 to 2018 were analyzed. A logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the association of protein/carbohydrate intake ratio quartile and metabolic syndrome.
Results
No significant association between protein/carbohydrate intake rate and metabolic syndrome was identified in male or female aged 65 years or older. The logistic regression analysis indicated that male had a higher triglyceride index.
Conclusion
A higher triglyceride index and higher protein versus carbohydrate intake were detected in elderly Korean male aged 65 years or older.
