Environmental Factors Affecting Prevalence of Allergic Diseases in Elementary School Children in a Province

Abstract

Background
The aim of the study was to investigate the association between allergic diseases and their relating factors in elementary school children living in an urban area.
Methods
A self-reported International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood questionnaire survey for allergic diseases was conducted for students aged 8-10 years enrolled in 31 elementary schools in Korea. The questionnaire contained children’s disease history, parent’s history, and environmental risk factors. The total of 3,554 children participated in the study from April to May in 2017. The data were analyzed using a chi-square test and logistic regression with SPSS 22.0.
Results
Allergic diseases' relating factors were fur toys, indoor chemical products, humid indoor environment, use of humidifier, and mold experience.
Conclusions
Based on the research results, research and education plans to improve the indoor environment were discussed.
