Abstract

A case of osteogenic sarcoma involving the distal part of the femur is reported. The patient was 15 year old female, who had a pathological fracture in the lesion one and a half months previously. The limb was immobilized in a cast under the diagnosis of fracture initially. Upon removal of the cast, large skin ulceration was found on the postero-lateral aspect of the distal thigh with unhealthy granulation. Radiological examination revealed complete displacement of the fracture fragments with bony destruction at the fracture site. There was no evidence of callus formation, but periosteal new bone formation was seen along the proximal fragment. Frozen section of the biopsy specimen suggested osteogenic sarcoma but was incondensive. The fracture was reduced and fixed with Steinmann pins. The final section subsequently confirmed the diagnosis of osteogenic sarcoma and a high above-knee amputaion was performed.
