Statistical Observations on Amputees

Abstract

A multitude of conditions demand amputations of parts of the extremities in order to maintain life or improve function. Amputation of an irreparably damaged or diseased limb is the first step in returning the patient to a normal and productive place in society. Statistical observations were carried out on 254 amputated limbs of 247 patients who were treated at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. College of Medicine, Seoul National University from Jan. 1957 to Aug. 1974. and following results were obtained. 1. The peak incidence was in the age group from 11 to 20 years in 60 cases (24.3%). 2. Of the 247 patients, 207 (83.8%) were male and 40 (16.2%), female. 3. The main causes of amputation were injuries (42.5%), malignant tumors (23.1%), and Bürger's disease (13.8%). 4. Amputations of the lower extremities were performed on 173 limb (68.1%). and among them the most frequent amputation was below the knee. 5. Muscle stabilizing procedures (tension myodesis or myoplasty) were carried out on 35 below knee amputations (54.7%), and 22 above knee amputations (12.3%). 6. Postoperative complications were observed in 64 stumps (25.2%), and re-operations were necessary in 24 cases. 7. A prosthesis was fitted in 113 limbs (44.5%). and successful prosthetic rehabilitation was achieved in 70% of the below knee amputees, and 52% of the above knee. 8. Immediate postoperative prosthesis was applied on 6 limbs (3 below knee and 3 above knee amputations), obtaining early stump healing and good rehabilitation.
