Clinical Study on Quadricepsplasty

Abstract

Many procedures of quadricepsplasty were reported by Thompson(1944), Judet(1959), Van Nes(1962), Nicoll(1963) and Hesketh(1963) in confining the indicaticn of them for the stricktly extra-articular origin of their causes. In this paper prcsents eleven cases of quadricepsplasty for the extra-articular origin. All the surgery was performed at 3rd Army Hospital, R.O.K.A. from 1964 to 1966 on young male soldiers (average 25.5 yrs. old). All of the knee stiffness were results of fracture of the femur including a case of pathological fracture from chronic csteomyelitis of the femur, and the average interval between onset of pathology and surgery were about 17 months. The results were excellent in gaining average range of knee motion about 93.8 degrees from the preoperative range of motion of 27.7 degrees except a case which had comminuted fracture of distal part of femur in Y-shape, however, there was no any findings of post-traumatic arthritis had been developed. The indications of quadricepsplasty should be stricktly kept on each cases and any previous intra-articular pathology should Le ruled out for this procedure even there is complete recovery at the time of this procedure.
