Hanging Hip Operation

Abstract

Two cases of osteoarthritis of the hip, treated by hanging hip operation, are presented. These two cases had been complicated respectively by hypertension and a svere gastro-intestinal disorder. The surgical intervention is relatively minor and allows early ambulation. We found satisfactory relief of pain. correction of the fixed muscular contractures, functicnal restoration and corresponding roentgenological improvement. The post-operative follow-up period was 19 months in one case and 15 months in the other, and it was found that the improvement of symptoms and signs was very gradual with slow improvement following the surgery. In one of the two cases, there was a severe osteo-condromatous change in the joint capsule, which also showed marked decrease along with the improvement of osteoarthritic symptoms and signs. Also introduced here is a brief reviews of the literature on the mechanism of relief of the osteoarthritic changes produced by the accepted major surgical procedures such as ostectomy of Mc Murray or Pauwels.
