CT findings of PNS aspergillosis

This study represents the clinical and radiologic analysis of PNS aspergillosis in 8 cases which wereconfirmed histopathologically, from Jan. 1986 to Dec. 1987. The results were as follows: 1. Of 8 cases, 2 caseswere males and 6 cases females. Age distribution was from 34 Yrs. to 55 Yrs. 2. Chief compaints at admission werevariable such as periorbital pain, nasal stuffness, facial pain, toothache and headache. The duration of symptomswas 4.6 months in average. 3. Involvements of PNS were maxillary, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses with descendingfrequency. 4. Plains tilms of PNS showed unilateral haziness and mucoperiosteal thicknening in all cases, withbony destruction in 2 cases. 5. In all cases, there were noted unilateral intermixture of high density, nodularsoft tissues with contrast enhancement, and bony sclerosis on CT scans. Bony destruction was noted in 3 cases.Characteristic high attenuation density (calcification ) were seen in the central necrotic areas in all cases. Weconsider that PNS aspergillosis is highly suggested when patient shows clinically aggressive symptoms and rapidprogression, and CT scans reveal bony destruction or calcifications in the central necrotic area.
