Simultaneous compensation for after-irradiation in the treatment of cervix cancer

Abstract

The combined radiation therapy which consists of the intracavitary radium application and externalcompensatory irradiation has been established in Yonsei Cancer Center. 149 cases received radium application amongthe total 355 patients of cervix cancer, which had been treated by irradiation from Oct. 1969 to dec. 1972 areexamined for the tumor dose on each point by Ernst radium application method. Point A; 5625 rads, Point B; 1864 rads, Co; 8375 rads. These data suggest that the metastatic lymph nodes absorbed insufficient dose from the radiumtreatment only and proportional irregularity of dose distribution on each point. The pattern of radium arrangementwas classified in 8 types as the frequency of use in the selected cases and the above facts were established bythe experimental study. And then, for delivery of cancer lethal dose in the primary site and involved pelviclymphatics simultaneously, the total cancer-cidal dose was estimated as ; Point A; 8000-9000 rads, Point B; 5500-6000 rads, Co; 12000-15000rads. The compensating devices in accordance with 8 types of radium arrangement aremade, to correct the irregularity of estimated tumor dose on each point when external compensatory Co-60irradiation is done, after-radium irradiation. Details are given of how the treatment is planned and applied. Theresult as so far obtained are gratfiying.
