A study on double contrast study in early gastric cancer

Abstract

Contray to advanced cases, post-operative 5 year survival rate of early gastric cancer is extremely high(95.9% in Japan). To detect early gastric cancer, double contrast study of the stomach is one of essential methodsincluding endoscopic examination. Since 1973, there has been detected 15 cases of early gastric cancer with doublecontrast study at Seoul National University Hospital. Among 15 cases, 6 cases were analized with double contraststudy, endoscopic examination, microscopic examination of resected specimen and pathological mapping usingmultiple serial sections. Conclusion are as follows. 1) Double contrast study is most important method indetection and evaluationof early gastric cancer. 2) With double contrast study one can predict macroscopic findingas well as pathological mapping. 3) Without pathological mapping the final diagnosis of early gastric cancershould not be made. 4) Radiological diagnosis of early gastric cancer should be qualitative.
