Relation of ABO and Lewis Blood Type Antigens to Helicobacter pylori Infection in Koreans: Lack of Clinical Association
Abstract
-
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Recently, it was demonstrated that the receptor for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is Lewis b blood type antigen. The aim of this study was to determine the relation of ABO and Lewis blood types to the H. pylori positivity. METHODS: Gastric mucosa were obtained from the 238 patients who received surgical treatment or gastric endoscopy for gastric disease. Positivity of H. pylori was determined according to the results of the culture of gastric mucosa or anti-H. pylori immunoglo- bulin G test.
RESULTS
The H. pylori-positivity (%) in A, B, O, and AB blood types were 81.6, 84.2, 82.4, and 71.4, respectively (p=0.562). There was no difference in H. pylori-positivity according to ABO blood types. Among 147 patients whose Lewis blood types were identified, the distribution (%) of Lewis blood types was lewis (a-b-) in 19.0, Lewis (a+b-) in 19.0, Lewis (a-b+) in 57.2, and Lewis (a+b+) in 4.8. The H. pylori positivity in Lewis blood types was as follows: Lewis (a-b-), 89.3%; Lewis (a+b-), 78.6%; Lewis (a-b+), 83.3%; Lewis (a+b+), 57.1%. There was no difference in H. pylori-positivity according to Lewis blood types.
CONCLUSION
There is no difference in H. pylori-positivity among ABO blood types and Lewis blood types.
