Abstract

Emphysematous cystitis is a rare clinical condition in which bacteria produce gas in the badder wall and lumen. Persons with diabetes mellitus, neurogenic bladder and chronic urinary infection are predisposed to the disease. Severity of illness ranges from an asymptomatic condition to life-threatening cystitis. Successful management depends on early diagnosis with correction of underlying causes. Treatments consist of establishing bladder drainage, administering proper antibiotics, and strict control of blood glucose level. Early dectection and prompt treatment are encouraged. We present a case of emphysematous cystitis in a 52-year-old female patient with diabetes mellitus.
