Dermoid and Epidermoid Cysts in the Face: Sonographic Findings

Abstract

PURPOSE: To analyze sonographic findings of dermoid and epidermoid cysts in the face and to assess the diagnostic value of high resolution ultrasonography for the cysts of the face.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
We reviewed retrospectively the sonographic findings in 11 cases of epidermoid cysts and 3 cases of dermoid cysts, and compared with pathologic findings. Ultrasonographs were analyzed in terms of locahon, size, echofexture, outer margin and posterior enhancement. Color Doppler ultrasonography was performed in 9 cases.
RESULTS
The lesion was noted in various sites of face region and located in the subcutaneous tissue in all cases. The greatest diameter was measured in range of 0.8-2,8 cm. All cysts were hypoechoic, and composed of fine internal echoes in 6 cases and coarse internal echoes in S cases. The lesions contained cystic portion in 6 cases and calcification in 1 case. The outer margin was well-demarcated in 12 cases, but ill-defined in 2 cases. The posterior acoustic enhancement was mild (n=9), moderate (n=3), and marked degree (n 2). There was no definite increase of color Doppler signals on color Doppler study.
CONCLUSION
The sonographic findings of epidermoid and dermoid cyst were a well-defined, hypoechoic mass with fine or coarse internal echoes and localized in the subcutaneous tissue of variable sites of the face. The ultrasonography is simple and reliable method for the preoperative evaluation of epidermoid and dermoid cysts.
