Radiologic Features of Benign Tumorous Conditions of the Gallbladder Focused on US Findings

Abstract

Tumorous conditions of the gallbladder encompass a broad spectrum of pathologic entities, including benign and malignant neoplasms, reactive processes, inflammatory lesions, and hyperplastic states. In practice, most of these conditions belong to either benign neoplasm or non-neoplastic lesion. Benign tumors of the gallbladder also contain a diverse group of pathologies, and lack a uniform nomenclature or classification. Current classification of benign tumorous conditions divides them into true neoplasms which originate in the epithelium and the supporting structures, hyperplastic lesions including adenomyomatosis and other hyperplastic cholecystoses, cystic lesions, heterotopic lesions, polyps including inflammatory polyp and cholesterol polyp, and other miscellaneous conditions. In this pictorial essay, we illustrate radiologic features of benign tumorous conditions of the gallbladder, focused on ultrasonographic findings, and discuss their radiologic differentiation, pathologic correlation and clinical significance.
