Diffuse Fatty Liver: Correlation between Sonographic Grades and Liver Function Tests

Abstract

PURPOSE: Sonography is highly senstive method for the detection of fatty infiltration of the liver. The purpose of this study was to establish the relationship of sonographic grades of diffuse fatty liver and liver function tests. MATERIALS & METHODS: We analyzed sonographic findings of the liver in 280 patients who had undergone liver function tests within one day before of after sonography. Those patients who had symptoms and physical observations indicative chronic liver disease or positive serum viral markers of metabolic liver disease were excludes from this study. On sonograms, we evaluated findings in terms of echogenicity of the liver, degree of acoustic attenuation and distinction of the portal vein wall and diaphragm.
RESULTS
Although many patients showed at least one of more abnormalities in liver function tests, ALT was the only significantly different factor between mild and severe group.
CONCLUSION
There is no direct relationship between the degree of abnormal liver function tests and the sonographic grades of diffuse fatty liver.
