Abstract

A prospective study was made of 68 patients with liver resection. We used the modified CDC(Centers for Disease Control) definition of surgical wound infection. The Infection rate after hepatic resection was 27.9%. The intraabdominal infection rate was 17.2%, the wound infection rate was 16.2% and the respiratory infection was 4.4%. The relationship between risk factors-primary disease, transfusion amount, the duration of operation, liver cirrhosis, Diabetes mellitus and the amount of hepatic resection - and the infection rate was analysed. An increase in the rate of infection occurred in hepatolithiasis patients. An increase in the rate of infection didn't occur in patients group with a 3 day duration of prophylactic antibiotics. We conclude that the 3 day duration of prophylactic antibiotic after hepatic resection was enough. Surgeon should take the bile for bacteriological study and irrigate meticulously the surgical wound in hepatolithiasis patients.
