Abstract

BACKGROUND: Many laboratories are using D-dimer tests for the investigation of suspected disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) which need early diagnosis and treatments. Recently, SimpliRED D-dimer assay (AGEN Biomedical Ltd, Australia) which is a rapid whole blood assay have been developed. Method: We evaluated diagnostic efficacy of SimpliRED D-diner and Dimertest D-dimer (Dade International Inc., USA) in 55 specimens referred to the coagulation laboratory in patients with suspected DIC. The patients were classified as DIC and non-DIC based on the DIC criteria by research committee in Japan.
RESULTS
In the diagnosis of DIC, sensitivities of SimphliRED and Dimertest D-dimer were 85.0% and 7.0% respectively. On the other hand, Dimertest D-dimer (60.0%) was more specific than that of SimpliRED D-dimer test (51.4%).
CONCLUSIONS
SimpliRED D-dimer assay, which can be performed on whole blood, has potential utility for the rapid diagnosis of DIC.
