The Collaborative Clinical Study on Dilated Cardiomyopathy in 15 Referral Hospitals in Korea

Abstract

A total of 385 cases of dilated cardiomyopathy were observed in the 15 referral hospital in Korea from Jaunary, 1982 to December, 1984, among whom 258 were male and 127 were female with the M:F ratio 2.03:1. In 55.9% of the patients(217 cases), no associated systemic diseases or other possible contributing factors leading to cardiomegaly or heart failure could be identified(Group I; idiopathic CMP Gr.). In group I, the mean age of the male patients was 50.7+/-0.5 yrs, which was significantly lower thatn the mean age of the female patients(56.5+/-7.6 yrs)(P<0.005). In the male patients the number of patients increased steeply after the age of 35 and this increased number was maintained until age 70. In the female patients the number of patients gradually increased from age of 45 until it got to the peak number at ages between 60 and 64. The duration of symptoms was shorter than 2 months in 25.6%, shorter than 6 months in 45.1%, and shorter than one year in 53.1% suggesting that this disease starts rather abruptly in the middle age. Serious arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation(28.0%), PVC's(19.5%), LBBB(10.8%), supraventricular thchycardia(2.0%), and ventricular tachycardia(1.4%)were observed in these patients with dilated cardiomyopathy.
