A Case of Human Insulin Allergy Induced by Rapid Acting Human Recombinant Insulin, Humulin-R

Abstract

Since human recombinant insulin applied, insulin allergy is rare. We experienced a case of human insulin allergy in a 31-year-old female diabetic patient who was well controlled by Humulin 70/30 (Lilly France S.A.S) composed of rapid Humulin-R and intermediate Humulin-N. Her symptoms such as whole body itching, dyspnea, nausea, and lightheadedness occurred 1 or 2 minutes after injection, which completely recovered around 30 minutes later. Before this event, she also experienced urticaria on injection site several times. Skin prick test with Humulin 70/30, Humulin-R, Humulin-N, Novolet-R, Novolet-N, Protamin, and Zinc was done. Only Humulin 70/30 and Humulin-R showed strong positive reactions. So she was diagnosed as Humulin-R allergy.
