Abstract

This study was performed to evaluate the level of bone formation using mixture of human, bovine, pig, rabbit or dog toothash and plaster of Paris in calvarial osseous defects in rats. The critical size defect of rat calvaria, 8 mm size in diameter, was used and 60 rats were divided into 6 experimental groups, respectively 10 rats. And the 6 groups were divided into 2 groups, respectively 5 rats. The experimental group 1 was grafted with human, toothash and plaster of Paris combination, experimental group 2 was grafted with bovine toothash and plaster of Paris combination, experimental group 3 was grafted with pig toothash and plaster of Paris combination, experimental group 4 was grafted with rabbit toothash and plaster of Paris combination, experimental group 5 was grafted with dog toothash and plaster of Paris combination and experimental group 6(control group) was not grafted. The experimental rats were sacrificed at the 6th and The results were as follows : More significant new bone forming activity was found in all experimental group than control group. In all groups, there were more significant new bone forming activity was found in 12 weeks group than 6 weeks group. There were no significant differences of new bone forming activity in These results suggested that the mixture of human, bovine, pig, rabbit, dog toothash and plaster of Paris might be effective materials for new bone formation in osseous defects.
