Abstract

Abdominal ultrasonography is useful tool for the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis. However, it is difficult to diagnose without typical lesion-like liver surface modularity or splenomegaly. Misdiagnosis of liver cirrhosis could be associated with increasing complications and a bad prognosis. A 62-year-old female visited our hospital with edema. Abdominal ultrasonography showed tortuous splenic vein dilatation without definite liver surface nodularity or splenomegaly. Portal hypertension increased vascular resistance and caused the vascular structure to become irregular and tortuous. The patients were diagnosed as having liver cirrhosis with hepatitis B and treated with an antiviral agent. We reported this case and discussed how to diagnose liver cirrhosis with abdominal ultrasonography.
