Clinical Observation on the Patient with Pulmonary Tuberculosis as an Outpatient

Abstract

Tuberculosis remains a very important cause of preventable disease in Korea. The National Survey of 1980 revealed that there are 186,000 patients with active diseases bacteriologica11y. Since University Hospital is still one of the major control centers for patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, we evaluated its contribution in the treatment of tuberculosis at the outpatient dispensary base. 1) One hundred fifty-six cases were selected from patients with sputum smear and/ or culture positive. Fifty-six patients were rejected at the initial follow-up period. 2) Among the initially selected patients, only 100 were eligible for analysis. 3) The negative conversion rate of sputum for AFB within 3 months was 90.0% in fresh cases and 40. 0% in retreated cases. 4) Twelve cases were found to be successful retreated cases, but half of the cases were treated by a new regimen according to the results of sputum culture and drug sensitivity. 5) In summary, follow up observation of the sputum culture for AFB in suggestive cases is necessary. In retreat cases, drug sensitivity test is important for an effective anti TB-regimen.
