Incidence of basal ganglia calcification on brain CT

Abstract

Although the incidence of calcification of the basal ganglia at routine autopsies was reported to be 3.4%,that of basal ganglia calcification on brain CT was known to be as low as 0.4%(Koller, 1979; Sachs, 1979; 박철민,1981). The purpose of the present study was to analyze the incidence of basal gangllia calcification according tothe generation of CT machines. The results were as follows: 1. The incidence of basal ganglia calcification wassignificantly higher when a 3rd generation brain CT was used (2.2%) than a 2nd generation brain CT was used(0.9%). 2. The incidence of basal ganlia calcification was significantly higher in the female (2.1%) than in themale(0.8%). 3. The incidence of basal ganglia calcification increased with age. 4. The commonest site of basalganglia calcification was the globus pallidus.
