Consecutive Cyclic Esotropia Developing After Surgery for Intermittent Exotropia

Abstract

Cyclic esotropia is a rare and interesting form of strabismus, which is characterized by alternating periods of esotropia & orthophoria, and the exact mechanism of this form is obscure. Because the cycle usually breaks and esotropia becomes constant over a period of time, treatment is surgical, aimed at the maximal deviation and the result has been proven to be good. The consecutive cyclic esotropia developing after surgery for intermittent exotropia has rarely been reported at home and abroad. We experienced the consecutive cyclic esotropia after surgery for intermittent exotropia in six-year-old girl. Eight months postoperatively the esotropia of 24-hour cycle was developed and then switched to a 48-hour cycle four months later. After undergoing two times of strabismus surgery she has gained good binocular vision with disappearance of the cyclic pattern for more than two years follow-up period.
