Histopathological Study of Corneal Wound Healing after Holmium : YAG laser Thermokeratoplasty in Rabbit

Abstract

The animal study was conducted to investigate the histopathologic effect of holmium: YAG laser thermokeratoplasty on the rabbit cornea. Ten eyes of five shite rabbits received holmium: YAG laser thermokeratoplasty, and hematoxylin & eosin staining and immunohistochemical staining for type II, IV, VI collagen were performed at 1,2,4,12, and 20 weeks following irradiation. Corneal endothelium was not changed. The hyperplasia of epithelium and disorganized stromal architecture appeared in early postoperative period had been normalized until 20 weeks. There was no difference in type III collagen staining between untreated and irradiated tissue at any postoperative period. Type IV collagen at epithelial basement membrane has been present intnsely until 20 weeks, and increased type VI collagen in stroma disappeared at 20 weeks after holmium: YAG laser thermokeratoplasty, and some problems may remain in adgesion between the epithelium and the stroma because of the change of type IV collagen.
